EMMA COBB (nee Britten) (c1812-1886) - Butcher of Kings Road, Chelsea, London

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

This is the Last Will and Testament of me Emma Cobb of no. 52 King's Road, Chelsea in the County of Middlesex, widow. I appoint my three sons Joseph Cobb, Hewett Cobb and George Aley Cobb, Executors and trustees of this my Will and bequeath to each of them twenty pounds for their trouble. I bequeath my leasehold messuage shop and premises situate no. 52 Kings Road, Chelsea aforesaid (subject to the underlease granted by me to my said sons Hewett and George Aley) unto my executors and trustees for all my term and interest therein upon trust after discharging the ground rent, insurance and any other outgoings to pay the rents and profits of the said messuage and premises as they accrue due to my three daughters, Emma Ratcliffe the wife of Edward Anthony Ratcliffe, Mary Ann Phillips the wife of David Phillips and Jessie Cook the wife of Theophilus Cook, for their separate use without power of anticipation as joint tenants so that upon the death of one of my said daughters the said rent and profits shall be paid to the other two for their separate use without power of anticipation. And upon the death of two of my said daughters, the whole shall be paid to the survivor of my said three daughters for her separate use absolutely for all the then remainder of my term and interest in the said premises.

I bequeath to my sister Eliza Dowding fifty pounds duty free and to each of my grand children living at my decease twenty pounds and I direct that the legacy of each grand child who may be a minor at my decease shall be place in a Post Office or any other Savings Bank in the name of such grandchild.

I bequeath to my daughter-in-law Emily Harriet Cobb fifteen pounds duty free to purchase a ring or any other article she pleases as a memento.

I bequeath to my said son Joseph a case for cutlery, picture of Madonna and Child, small bible and Prayer Book containing dates of births and an easy chair spring back covered with leather.

To my said son Hewett two ornaments (Paul and Virginia), green dessert service, six silver teaspoons and sugar tongs, four table spoons in daily use, china bowl chinese figures on same.

To my said son George Aley, old fashioned china tea service, picture of his late father when young, four silver dessert spoons, four salt spoons, looking glass in front room and looking glass in parlour and six volumes of Once a Week.

To my said daughter Emma Ratcliffe for her separate use, a ring set with pearls containing hair, two silver table spoons, feather bed and two pillows and plain gold brooch.

To my said daughter Mary Ann Phillips, Illustrated Prayer Book, diamond ring, a mourning brooch in memory of Joseph Britten, two table spoons, wool flowers in case and small silver bracelet.

To my said daughter Jessie Cook, ormolu cabinet (not contents), moderator bronze lamp, gold watch and key seal and ring, two table spoons and wide silver bracelet.

I bequeath all the residue of my household goods and effects to my said son Joseph to be divided or given by him to or among any one or more of his brothers and sisters in such manner as he may think fit but he is not to take any share for himself. And as to all my monies and securities for money and all the residue of my estate and effects whatsoever and wheresoever to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease or have power to dispose of by this my Will, I bequeath one sixth part of the same to each of my five children, Joseph, Hewett, George Aley, Mary Ann and Jessie, the share of my daughters in the said residue and also the aforesaid bequests to each of them to be for her separate use. And as to one other sixth part of the said residue, I bequeath the same to my trustees upon trust to invest the same in or upon government or real or leasehold securites or the preference stock or debenture stock of any railway company in England with power to vary the investments at their discretion. And upon further trust to apply the capital and income of the trust monies and premises in payment to my said daughter Emma Ratcliffe for her separate use without power of anticipation and upon her separate receipt of the sum of four pounds a month to be paid on the first day of each calendar month and the first payment to be made at the expiration of six calendar months after my decease and I declare that so much of the capital and income of the said trust monies and premises as shall remain in the hands of my trustees at the death of my said daughter shall be held in trust for her daughter Ada for her separate use but in case her said daughter shall die under the age of twenty one years, without being married, in trust for my other five children herein before named in equal shares, the share of each of my daughters to be for her separate use.

Lastly I revoke all former Wills. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this fourteenth day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred and eighty two.

On the 17th March 1886 probate of this Will was granted to Joseph Cobb one of the Executors.
