ARCHIBALD McKAIN (1717-1777) - SHOEMAKER AND BURGESS OF ELGIN, MORAYSHIRE

Archibald McKain, my 6 x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 9th June 1717 in the parish of Boharm, Morayshire, the son of James McKain (14th of Ardnamurchan) and Beatrix Dowglass - source: Scottish Old Parish Register (OPR) records.

(According to C.A.Mackain in his "History and Genealogy of the Ancient House of Ardnamurchan", Archibald's parents were James (14th of Ardnamurchan) and Catherine McKain), although there is no supporting source reference for this.)

On the death of his father in 1737, Archibald succeeded him as the 15th Chief of Ardnamurchan (source: C.A.Mackain)

Archibald married Elspeth Leslie of the Glen of Rothes and had 3 children, James (my 5 x Great Grandfather), Alexander and Elisabeth.

Archibald owned a Tannery in Elgin, Morayshire (source: C.A.Mackain)

It's believed that after Archibald, the Tannery was run by his son-in-law George McKain.

Robert Young noted in 1879 ("The Annals of the parish and burgh of Elgin") that the Mackeans carried on a tanning trade in premises where the "present shambles now stands" but the family "died out early in this century" (19th).

Death and Burial - Archibald died on 5th August 1777 and was buried in the Cathedral churchyard at Elgin. (PUBLICATION: 1777 Parish Registers REFERENCE: MF-A-EL3). There is no surviving tombstone.
