My Penfold family link is through my maternal 5 x Great Grandmother, Mary Penfold. Mary, one of 8 children of Henry and Sarah (nee Hills) of Angmering, Sussex, married my 5 x Great Grandfather Richard Ragless, in Angmering on 2nd September 1779.
From Mary, I've traced my Penfold ancestry back to my 10 x Great Grandfather, Richard Penfold, of Angmering (c1545-1608), who married Elizabeth Parsons on 6th November 1570. It was a descendant of Richard's youngest son Hugh, Christopher Rawson Penfold (1811-70) and his wife Mary (nee Holt), who founded the famous Penfold winery in South Australia in 1844.
Richard and Elizabeth had 3 sons, the youngest being Hugh (1584-1658/9), my 9 x Great Grandfather.
Hugh Penfold, my 9 x Great Grandfather, was baptised at Angmering on 30th August 1584. He married Alice Oliver on 28th September 1612 and they had 10 children, including my 8 x Great Grandfather Oliver (1620-69).
Oliver Penfold, my 8 x Great Grandfather, was baptised at Angmering on 10th December 1620. He married Joan (surname unknown) and they had 9 offspring, the youngest of whom was Richard (1662-1750), my 7 x Great Grandfather.
Richard Penfold, my 7 x Great Grandfather, was baptised at Angmering on 9th November 1662. He married Mary Charman at Billingshurst, Sussex on 21st June 1688 and they had 8 children, including my 6 x Great Grandfather, Henry (1702-1784).
Henry Penfold, my 6 x Great Grandfather, was baptised on 9th April 1702 at Angmering. He married Sarah Hills, widow of Richard Howel, on 8th August 1736 at Angmering. Henry and Sarah had 9 children, including Mary (1741-1823), my 5 x Great Grandmother. Henry died in 1784.
Mary Penfold, my 5 x Great Grandmother, was baptised at Angmering on 24th February 1741 and married Richard Ragless at Angmering on 2nd September 1779.
With many thanks to my cousin Joanne Smissen for all her hard work and with acknowledgement to the wonderful Angmering Village Life website created by Neil Rogers-Davis.
