Reg Mayhew's Family History

MY RAMPLING FAMILY

My Rampling family link is through my paternal 2 x Great Grandmother, Louisa Rampling. Louisa, one of 11 children of Richard and Harriet (nee Dowson) of Lowestoft, Suffolk married my 2 x Great Grandfather George Walter Mayhew, in 1870.

From Louisa, I've traced my Rampling ancestry back to my 6 x Great Grandfather, Ambrose Rampling, c1730-1804, who married Susannah Green in 1751, at St. Mary's, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. Ambrose was a favoured name in this branch of the Rampling family and was used through at least 6 generations to 1876.

Ambrose and Susannah had 4 children, the eldest being Ambrose (c1755-1833), my 5 x Great Grandfather. Susannah died in 1756/57 (she was buried on 3rd January 1757). With young children to be cared for, Ambrose promptly remarried on 6th February 1757 to Eliza Asker.

Ambrose Rampling (c1749-1833), my 5 x Great Grandfather, was baptised at St, Mary's, Bury St. Edmunds. His first marriage, to Hannah Calvert, ended in tragic circumstances, the precise details we can only guess at. They married in April 1781, had a child, Susan, buried in May and Hannah followed her to the grave in June. Ambrose married his second wife, Elizabeth Maskcall (my 5 x Great Grandmother) on 29th December 1783 in Norfolk. Ambrose and Elizabeth had 6 children, including Ambrose (born 1787), my 4 x Great Grandfather.

Ambrose senior died in 1833 and was buried on 14th October at Bury St. Edmunds.

My 4 x Great Grandfather, Ambrose Rampling (1787-1869), a Woolcomber, was born on 22nd February 1787. He married Mary Edwards, of Bristol, Gloucestershire on 21st June 1816 at St. Mary's, Arnold, Nottinghamshire and they had 7 children, all born in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. The eldest, Richard (1816-1899), was my 3 x Great grandfather.

My 3 x Great Grandfather, Richard Rampling was born on 22nd September 1816 and married Harriet Dowson (probably in a hurry *) at St. Mary's church in the tiny village of Uggeshall, Suffolk on 20th August 1838. I don't know what their connection with Uggeshall was, certainly neither of them was born there. Uggeshall is approximately 10 miles from Lowestoft, which is where Richard and Harriet and their family were residing 13 years later, at the time of the 1851 Census. They continued to live in Lowestoft for the rest of their lives, at a number of addresses including Chapel Street, White Horse Street and St. John's Road. They had 11 children, 7 boys and 4 girls (including Louisa, my 2 x Great Grandmother).

* Their first child, Joseph Ambrose, was baptised less than a month later at St. Margaret's, Lowestoft.

Louisa RamplingLouisa Rampling, my 2 x Great Grandmother, was born on 25th March 1850 in Lowestoft, Suffolk. She moved to London (some time between 1861 and 1870), where she met my 2 x Great Grandfather George Walter Mayhew, a Painter and Decorator. They married at St. Mary Abbotts, Kensington, London on 26th December, 1870 and had 12 children, including my Great Grandfather, Arthur John Mayhew. At the time of her marriage, her address was given as Redcliffe Street, Chelsea, where she may have been in service.

Louisa lived with her family at 4 Eden Place, Chelsea for over 30 years and in 1888 she was a witness at the trial of James White for the murder of his wife, Margaret White, at 1 Eden Place. (The Proceedings of the Old Bailey).)

Louisa died in Chelsea in 1917, outlived by her husband George Walter, who died in 1924.
